Holiday information

Happy Holidays to everyone!!! I just got this from OCSO and it has some good information concerning safety for the Holidays..... Dave
Holiday Greetings and welcome back!

Soon our children will be out of school for the holidays. Our next message is geared towards holiday safety of our children and young adults.

Please take the time to not only read over our message but also plan and discuss these with your family.

Always:
If you must take children with you shopping, always keep them with you. It’s always best to find a reliable and trusted friend or family member to watch them when you are shopping.
Accompany and supervise children in public facilities including restrooms.
Have a plan in case you get separated. Have designated meeting spot.
Teach children that if they get lost to look for people that can help such as law enforcement, employee or a mother with children.
Remind children to remain in the area they become separated.
Turn shopping trips into opportunities to practice safe holiday shopping.
Never:
Never dress children in clothing that displays their first or last names. This can prompt unwelcome attention from someone looking to start a conversation with your child.
Never leave children in toy stores or public facilities expecting supervision from others.
Never go shopping or attend public events with children if you feel you may become distracted.
Never allow young children to shop on their own. Even if it is to purchase surprise gifts for family or friends.
Never drop off young adults at a mall or public place without agreeing on plans for a time and location to pick them up. This may include alternate plans if the original plans fall through.

Travel: If your child is traveling alone by train, bus or air, please remember the following travel safety tips.
When you make reservations for your child, ask what provisions and security are provided by the company for children traveling alone.
Request a copy of the carriers policy and emergency procedures before booking.
If possible book a non stop flight or direct route. Never book the last flight of the day.
Plan to visit the location where the child will travel from prior to departure. Have the person picking up the child do the same at the arrival destination. This is so the child will know what to expect and not have the experience be as intimidating.
Plan ahead for a delay. Stay with the child at the terminal until they depart.
Always make sure your child travels with proper identification along with the contact information for both the departing and receiving party.
Have a back up plan for the person meeting your child in case of a delay.
Explain to children not to become too friendly with other passengers and to not reveal any personal information.
Always write the name down as a record of the employee who is taking custody of your child.
Always have the child contact you upon arrival. Many websites now offer real time tracking of airline flights.

Info on Traveling

Hi All, I hope Thanksgiving was good for everybody and you ate a lot of food. I received this from the O.C.S.O. so I am passing it on, be safe..... Dave

Holiday Travel: If you are leaving during the holidays or out shopping. Reduce your chances of a burglary by making your home appear occupied. Such as:
1. Using timers within different locations in your home. Not only for lighting fixtures but also for electronics such as televisions and radios. Never put a Christmas tree or Christmas lights on a timer if you will be gone.
2. Have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up your mail and place their trash receptacle in your driveway.
3. If a friend or neighbor has an extra car, have them park it in your driveway.
4. Leave your gifts at the home of a friend or family member while you are gone.
Contact the Orange County Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency and request they do area checks of your home while you are away. If you come back early, let us know.
Leave a travel itinerary with a friend. Make sure you provide them expected time of arrival, departure, address, phone numbers and who you will be with. Make sure you check in with them.
Travel with a fully charged cell phone, and charger for both your vehicle and a regular outlet.
Make sure your vehicle is in good condition to include; tire, tire pressure, proper fluid levels and it is always fueled. Have a mechanic check it out before you go.
If you travel with a GPS, always make sure you have a back up such as a map or pre-printed directions. Always check for road closures, construction and weather conditions. If you are traveling in Florida you can always call 5-1-1 for road information.
Always travel with your windows up and doors locked. If you need to ask directions, make sure you stop at a well traveled well lighted location such as a gas station.
Always wear your seat belt and make sure children are properly restrained.
Never discuss your travel plans with a stranger.
If you are using a rental vehicle make sure you become familiar with it.
Limit personal information on your luggage tags.
Many criminal elements will target those who look like travelers. Avoid becoming a target by:
1. Keep items in your vehicle out of plain view such as souvenirs and maps.
2. Avoid wearing clothing that is sold to tourist in that particular area.
3. Carry a camera that will fit in your pocket or purse.
4. Personalize your rental vehicle by placing a simple inexpensive air freshener on your rear view mirror.

Drunk Driver

Have you ever wondered what to do if you see a drunk driver? Well here is some information on what to do... Be safe.... Dave

Can I report drunk drivers to 911 on my cell phone?

Answer:
Yes. Calls to 911 on a cell phone are free, but unlike regular phones we can't tell where you are calling from. Be prepared to give your location, direction of travel and a description of both cars. You safety is of utmost importance to us. Do not pursue the drunk driver or in any way place yourself in danger. Eviction is a legal process that often times requires a court order. For more information, contact our Civil and Criminal Process Section at 407-836-4510.

I.C.E. Important

Hi Everybody,
I have something that is very important to discuss with everybody, it is called I.C.E. That is short for "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY". Here is how it works. The emergency and police have been advised to look for that on your cell phones when ever they arrive at a scene where the person is not able to communicate. They look for a cell phone and then see if there is a listing for I.C.E. So please add to your phone book in your cell phone I.C.E. and place one or two phone numbers that they would be able to call "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY".

Everybody please be safe this Holiday season, and lets keep an eye out for
BENT OAK........Dave Sukkert

MOVE OVER LAW

Hi Everybody, here is some information on the Move Over Law.... Dave

FHP Raises Awareness for Move Over Law
The Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane whenever an emergency vehicle on the side of the road has its lights activated. If moving over is not a viable option, drivers must simply slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
Florida adopted the law in 2002 after several emergency response personnel were killed or injured while working on the side of the road. In the past decade, more than 150 law enforcement officers nationwide have been killed by passing motorists while performing their duties on our highways.
The Move Over Law enforcement effort is part of a series where the Florida Highway Patrol focuses on a specific traffic law and cites anyone caught violating that law. The series is called Be Smart, Drive Smart Florida! The Patrol partnered with law enforcement agencies across the state through Labor Day to raise awareness and enforcement of the Move Over Law. During the operation, law enforcement officers worked together along busy highways and interstates to stop those who violated the law.
In addition to enforcement, the Department has created Public Service Announcements, which are available for viewing and download the Department’s website at www.flhsmv.gov/SafetyTips/MoveOverTips.htm. In addition, troopers handed out brochures during traffic stops. The brochures also are available in FHP stations, driver license offices and other locations throughout the state. Also, radio PSAs aired statewide on Florida News Network for a two-week period. Both the brochures and radio PSAs have English and Spanish versions. Federal grants dollars through the Florida Department of Transportation funded this year’s Move Over Law campaign materials.

BOLO Bent Oak Look Out

Man this is getting too close, please check your vehicles and LOCK them up, and remove valuables...... Dave

The ALERT below was forwarded to me earlier today by a Sweetwater Country Club (Orange County neighborhood w/entrances off Wekiva Springs Rd.) NW coordinator who received it from another SW Watch coordinator last night.
This now makes 2 neighborhoods (one on Thompson Rd. near Votaw) that I know have experienced these types of crimes in the past 2 or 3 days. In the Sweetwater CC instance, however, the thieves also stole a car (see bottom of ALERT below).
Derry Sampey, Coordinator
DLR Neighborhood Watch

btw: Shed total is now 8. Suggestion for new gate/shed lock: Master Lock Magnum. The part on which someone would need to use a bolt-cutter is too short for such an attempt to be successful and is made of boron-carbide. $13.75 at a hardware store. As we all know: If people really want to break in somewhere, they will likely find a way. But we can try to make it harder for them to do so.

ALERT -- ALERT -- ALERT

Sometime between midnight and 3:00 Wednesday morning, the following violations occurred in Sweetwater Country Club (Orange County):

1) An unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway at Majestic Oak Dr., was entered and contents, including a garage door remote, were scattered on the front lawn. Fortunately, the garage door opener was shut off. Nothing of value was taken.

2) Another unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway next door was also ransacked.

3) At the first address, a second vehicle that parked in the driveway, was broken into and a purse was taken. Illegal use of a debit card from that purse was recorded at 3:53 am.

4) Across the street, another vehicle parked in the driveway was entered and ransacked.

5) On Orchard Dr., a vehicle parked in the driveway was entered and a garage door remote was used to open the garage door. A vehicle was stolen from inside that garage.

"BOLO" Bent Oak Look Out

I received this and wanted to post it, be safe..... Dave

At least two backyard sheds were broken into today in Deer Lake Run, at homes in the vicinity of the Welch Rd.-Thompson Rd. intersection. One home has a 6' fence; the other does not. The lock on a trailer was also cut at one home. When I spoke with the homeowner, she had just discovered the broken trailer lock and was going to see what was missing. If you believe you saw anything/anyone suspicious in that area today, please let me know, and I will have the homeowners get in touch with you. They will have case #s and be able to contact the deputy who took their reports.
Meanwhile, keep your gates locked from the inside and your garage doors down, whenever possible.

From the Sheriffs office

Here is some information we need to know, ya'll be safe..... Dave

Just in from the OCSO Crime Prevention Unit

Subject: WARNING: 2010 Census Cautions from the BBB
Neighbors Helping Neighbors

This information is being distributed by the Dallas / Ft. Worth
IBMer Organization to warn it's thousands of members of fraud associated
with the 2010 Census (some pre-census activity is already underway).
However, this warning is for ALL citizens so you may want to pass it on
to everyone you know.

2010 Census Cautions
by Susan Johnson - August 3, 2009 12:07 pm
Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers
With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big
question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census
worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:
** If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers nor will employees solicit donations.
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
For more advice on avoiding identity theft and fraud,
visit http://www.bbb.org/.

CAR SEATS

Car seats, is your correct, here is some information that may help.... Dave

Precious cargo: Choosing and using car safety seats

For safety, children should be properly secured in cars every time they ride. Child safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for children ages 1 to 4 years, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kids younger than age 13 years should ride in the back seat, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). But, how they ride depends on their age and size. Also, be familiar with the laws in your state.

There are four stages of car seat safety:

1. Rear-facing seats are for infants. Keep babies in rear-facing car seats for as long as possible — at least until your child is age 1 year and weighs 20 pounds. Never put these seats in the front seats of vehicles, especially those that have active passenger-side air bags. If the bag inflates, it could cause serious injury or death. The safest place for all infants and children is the back seat.

2. Forward-facing seats come next. They should be placed in the back seat away from airbags. These seats are for toddlers and preschoolers who are at least age 1 year or older and weigh 20 pounds or more. They can ride in this seat until they reach the upper height or weight limit of the seat, usually around 40 pounds or age 4 years. Your child has outgrown it if his or her shoulders are above the top harness slots or ears have reached the top of the seat.

3. Booster seats are for kids who’ve outgrown their forward-facing car safety seats. They help seat belts fit properly across the lap and shoulder. Use one until a seat belt fits properly without the use of a booster seat, usually around age 8 years or 4 feet 9 inches tall.

4. Seat belts are for children who’ve outgrown booster seats, usually age 8 years or taller than 4 feet 9 inches. The lap belt should fit across the upper thighs and a shoulder belt should run across the chest — not the neck or throat. Be a good role model. Always wear your seat belt, too.

Check your technique
Have your car seat checked to be sure you’ve installed it correctly. Visit the NHTSA Web site at www.nhtsa.gov. Click on “Locate a Child Seat Fitting Station” under “Quick Clicks.” Enter your zip code to find a local technician who will check your safety seat. Your local fire station may install and inspect car seats, too.

From the files of law inforcement.... Dave
Pay stub used as bank robbery note

Here we go again... another stupid criminal. The robber's threatening note made a Chicago bank job easy to solve: The FBI says the suspect wrote it on his pay stub. An FBI affidavit said the man walked into a Fifth Third Bank on Friday and handed a teller a note that read "Be Quick Be Quit (sic). Give your cash or I'll shoot."

The robber got about $400 but left half of his note. Investigators found the other half outside the bank's front doors. Authorities say that part of the man's October pay stub had his name and address.

The suspect was arrested at his Cary home. A judge ordered him held without bond Monday. If convicted of bank robbery, he faces 20 years in prison.

BOLO Bent Oak Look Out

I recieved this from one of our block captains, please be on guard..... thank you.... Dave

Dave,
A neighbor just called me.She was jogging in the neighborhood when a car drove past her. She didn't think much about, but it passed her a second time a little slower. On the 3rd time, he really slowed down so she managed to go to a neighbor and he drove her home. It was a Caucasian male with curly hair. He was smoking. The car was a late model perhaps a civic or similar, light gray or creamy white. This happened today at 4:30.

"Free" alarm systems

Watch out for a young man that is going around talking about putting in "free" security systems. As most of you, know you do not get anything for free, the system is free, but the monitoring is quite expensive. Is what is being done is they are dropping names saying that that person is very interested in getting the system and that person is very happy with it. One of our neighbors did a lot of research on the company's and ended up backing out of it completely. There is one company that puts the system in, then you sign a five year contract with the second company, and that's the one that will get you, so please be on the guard for them, thank you.... Dave

New Scam, this time it is in the E-Mails

Just pulled this out of the OCSO web site....

Cyber-Security Tips

IRS Phishing Email

This one references the IRS stimulus checks that you may have received last year. The email tries to get a user to click on the link because ‘you didn’t get all of the money you were entitled to’ on the last round of checks. (I’ve pasted a copy of the email below and removed the link so no one can ‘accidentally’ click on it) J The spelling and grammar are very good on this one (usually, bad spelling/grammar are a dead give way with these type emails) but when I dug deeper into the ‘www4irs.gov’ link, it actually went to a computer in Sweden. So unless the IRS has a field office in Vasteras, Sweden; I’m betting it is malicious.

I attempted to visit the site via a ‘hardened’ computer that I keep around just for these occasions and found that the website is currently down. Many times this is the case because a hacker will compromise a computer, set a fake site up, it gets discovered pretty quickly and then the site is shut down. The hackers will then just compromise another computer and repeat the process again. They are attempting to collect personal or account information so it doesn’t take too many successful hits for them to reap a profit.

Anyway, this is just a heads up if you see one of these in your email boxes. As always, as long as you don’t click the links or open any of the attachments that may be included, you’ll be fine.

With all of the Rain

Today while I went for a short drive I noticed that there were several sprinklers going, even with all of the rain. I don't know if anybody from Orange County would send out a ticket or a warning on using the sprinklers or not. I just want to let everybody know that even with all of the rain we have been getting we are still in bad shape with our water supply, so please check your sprinklers so you do not get the notice, this is just a friendly reminder..... thank you, Dave

BOLO, New Scam

This BOLO,(Bent Oak Look Out) is a new scam that is around, please be on guard... Dave

Fake security guy
running scam

By SHAY HARRIS | FOX 35 News
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A bogus security guy is knocking on doors trying to rip people off saying he's with ADT but he's not.

For fifteen years Jeff Saeli has lived in the Waterford Chase community. He says it’s a nice neighborhood; but, not immune to crime. So he wasn’t surprised when a con-man came calling this week. “He came around right at the time we were sit down for dinner, he knocked on the door. He mentioned to me that he was here because of increased crime in the area and that ADT had sent them out and to write a service for us.”

Saeli says the stranger wore an ADT security uniform and went door to door pretending to make a sales and upgrades. “First of all there shouldn’t be any solicitation in this neighborhood I believe it’s on one of the signs on the subdivision; I don’t usually talk to people who come to the door.”

Saeli was not sure whether the man was able to convince anyone to give him money or access to their homes; but, the man didn’t get past his front door. “I’m suspicious of anyone coming to the door anyhow and I don’t like people coming to the door anyhow and I don’t let people in the house and I don’t previously set up so I told him I wasn’t interested, he was little insistent I told him no thank you he went on his way.”

FOX 35 has calls into the Orange County Sheriff's Office to find out what they're doing about the bogus security workers. Meanwhile, an ADT spokesperson says the company would never send someone to your home on a cold-call without making an appointment.

NEW E-MAIL VIRUS

Hi Just got this from AARP.... Dave

E-mails promising Viagra discounts or dates with Russian models used to be the preferred way to get personal financial information from recipients. Now hackers have devised an ingenious way to unleash an identity-stealing computer virus from about the last place you’d expect an online attack: a parking lot.

Scammers place phony parking tickets on cars, which direct their owners to an “official” website that claims to have photos of the alleged violation. Once they go to the website, victims inadvertently download a nasty virus that can quickly cost them plenty.

Several drivers in Grand Forks, N.D., found tickets on cars they had parked at a shopping mall, hospital, grocery store or college campus. Some went to the designated website—and their computers were compromised.

“This very clever ploy bridges the [real] world with the virtual world, and I fear we’ll be seeing more of these types of attacks in the future,” says Lenny Zeltser, a computer security expert who uncovered the scam after a former student who lives in Grand Forks told him about a phony parking ticket.

After analyzing the virus website, Zeltser found that its potential dangers include:

Tricking you into buying fake antivirus software. The website instructs you to install a program to see photos of your car. The program then produces a message that announces your computer has a virus, and you’re offered worthless “repair” software for $50 or more.
Capturing user keystrokes to reveal your online passwords and account numbers. “If you do online banking,” Zeltser says, “this allows scammers access to your accounts, and they can remotely wire money from them.”
Enslaving the infected computer as a “bot” that can be used remotely to disseminate spam and gain access to other websites you visit. “You may never know your computer has become a bot, except that it might be slow or acting sluggishly,” Zeltser says.
Thus far, the parking ticket ploy has reportedly occurred only in Grand Forks, but Zeltser believes the scam will spread. Unlike other malware attacks, it doesn’t depend on you to open a corrupted e-mail sent by a stranger. Instead, it provides bait to lead you right to the virus, a gambit that he says “can be very lucrative for hackers.” How can you protect yourself?

Avoid unfamiliar websites. “Don’t visit a strange website simply because you get an e-mail or letter telling you to,” Zeltser says. “And if you do, never download or install new programs there unless you are sure you can trust the source.”
Be wary of dot-com cons. One giveaway on the parking ticket website: It ended in “.com.” Online addresses of most police and other official agencies end in “.gov.”
Consider a “security suite.” These newer protection programs—from McAfee and Norton—cost about $20 more than traditional antivirus and antispyware software, which may not find such malicious programs.

CONFLICKER WORM INFO

Here is some information on the new worm called CONFLICKER..... Dave

Personal computers and laptops already infected with Conficker could automatically be linked to the servers operated by the hackers.
By Mc Nelly Torres | South Florida Sun-sentinel
9:35 PM EDT, March 30, 2009
Cyber security experts are warning that a new variation of Conficker, a fast-spreading computer worm also known as Downadup, could attack millions of computers on Wednesday -- April Fool's Day.

Personal computers and laptops already infected with Conficker could automatically be linked to the servers operated by the hackers.

Esteban O. Farao, a consultant with Enterprise Risk Management, a Miami security consulting company, said the worm is not destroying files or stealing data, but it has the capability to do so.

"The main concern about this worm is that it is capable of downloading additional code from the hacker's Web site or through a peer-to-peer connection," Farao said. "Consequently it can bring more functionalities or receive instructions."

Experts say it's unknown whether the worm will cause havoc or merely turn out to be an April's Fool prank. But people can protect their computers by using security software.

Howard Schmidt, a former White House cyber security adviser, said computer users need to download an application of Microsoft software to detect and disable the worm. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

Experts also advise keeping your security applications and operating systems updated.
"The most interesting thing about this worm is that every time someone finds out a way to get rid of the worm, it reinvents itself with more rigor and better technology," Schmidt said.

Authorities have not identified the culprits behind the worm or their intentions. Microsoft has offered a $250,000 reward to bring the Conficker creator to justice.

The Conficker worm, which has infected 10 million computers outside the United States, is a program that exploits weaknesses in Microsoft's Windows operating system including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

The worm surfaced last November in computers on weak networks such as those in coffee shops, airport or offices. The second variation can spread via shared networks, including removable drives such as USB devices.

This worm also blocks infected systems from downloading new security software or receiving updates for security software. After attacking, it connects to a server where it receives instructions to propagate and gather personal information. Conficker creates a back door in the system where the worm can download and install additional programs.

Albert Whale, owner of ABS Computer Technology Inc., a Pittsburgh company that offers computer consulting services, said experts think the hackers are making money by getting information to send spam or attack people they don't like.

"Hackers spend 24 hours a day perfecting their craft," Whale said. "People don't even spend an hour a week securing their computers."

Staff researcher Barbara Hijek contributed to this report.

History of Orange County Sheriffs Office

The first sheriff of Orange County dates from the earliest days of Florida's statehood in 1845. On January 31, 1845, the area known as Mosquito County in Territorial Florida was renamed Orange County, a name reflective of the spreading blanket of orange groves throughout the region. Less than six weeks later, on March 3, 1845, Florida's status as a territory was changed to that of statehood. The first statewide election was conducted on May 26, 1845. William Henry Williams was elected to serve as Orange County's first sheriff.

Since 1845, numerous prominent individuals have held the position of the Orange County Sheriff, including David William Mizell. Mizell was the first and only sheriff killed in the line of duty. There have been numerous theories and tales regarding the story which lead to his demise, ranging from the local tradition of the 'Barber-Mizell feud' to Reconstruction politics to a lawman simply attempting to do his additional duty of levying fines and collecting taxes.

Much has changed within the Orange County Sheriff's Office since the first sheriff was elected more than a hundred and fifty years ago. Every sheriff elected since then has strived to improve the agency. Today the Orange County Sheriff's Office has a budget of over 140 million dollars and over 2,400 employees. Sheriff Jerry L. Demings was elected Sheriff of Orange County in November of 2008 and was sworn into office in January, 2009.

Sheriff's Office personnel are involved with providing direction and role models for the county's young people through the D.A.R.E, School Resource, Police Athletic League, and after school and summer B.A.D.G.E. programs. The agency also has programs for the elderly, the disadvantaged, and all community members through Community Policing outreach programs such as Victims of Crime Assistance League(VOCAL), and the Senior and Civilian Police Academy. Additionally, members of the agency and numerous citizens are assisted through the Sheriff's Chaplain Program, one of the largest in the nation, composed of all-volunteer ministers.

In recent years the agency has improved its computer, communications and records management systems. Mobile data terminals have been installed in patrol vehicles as well as the use of automatic vehicle locator system to ensure rapid response to citizen's calls for service. New .45 caliber semi-automatic weapons were issued to all deputies, replacing their 9mm, and new facilities were built in order to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the agency. Many functions, such as criminal investigation, were consolidated and moved to the new facilities. In addition, enhanced training for all members of the agency was implemented. Thanks to all sworn and civilian personnel, including volunteers, the Orange County Sheriff's Office became the first Nationally and State certified Law Enforcement Agency in Orange County.

New Phone Scam

I got this out of the paper, thought it was interesting..... Dave

Polk sheriff: Phone scam targets grandparents
The sheriff of Polk County issued a warning this week about a telephone scam targeting people with college-age grandchildren.

At least two people have lost thousands in the scam, according to a news release from Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

"When the victim answers the phone, the person on the other line says, 'Grandma?' (or 'Grandpa?') in hopes that the victim may at that point say the name of one of their grandchildren in response,'' the news release says.

"Then the suspect says, 'Yes, it's me' and uses the name just given to him. The suspect then portrays himself as that person's grandchild, saying he needs money for an emergency."
Recently, someone posing as someone's grandson duped the grandparent into wiring $3,500 to supposedly repair a car that was damaged while he was in Canada.

Then, that same victim got another call from a man who said he was a Niagara Falls police officer. "This man told her that she needed to wire an additional $4,200 to pay for repairs to property that her grandson had damaged during his car crash. The victim complied,'' the news release said.

What is Phishing?

Here is some information on Phishing..... Dave

Phishing is an email scam in which the criminal sends out legitimate-looking email in an attempt to gather personally identifiable information from recipients. The message appears to come from a well-known, legitimate website, such as PayPal or Bank of America, and will state that there is something wrong with the recipient's account information. The email will provide a link for the recipient to click on which takes the recipient to a counterfeit website made to look exactly like the legitimate one. The recipient is then asked to enter personally identifiable information. For more detailed information on phishing scams, please refer to our Phishing page on SecureFlorida.org. You can report phishing emails to the Anti-Phishing Working Group. If you are the victim of a phishing scam, please follow the steps outlined by the Anti-Phishing Working

Good Hints to be safe

Crime Alert

Vehicle Safety Tips
Some basic information to help keep you safe while you are out in your car....

· Drive Safely and obey all traffic laws... don't attract attention to yourself by driving aggressively or in a manner that would make you stand out in a crowd.

· Be alert to what is going on around you at all times... be aware of your surroundings and be cognizant of suspicious vehicles and people, especially when you are stopped at a traffic light. Take note of your surroundings as you pull into a parking space which should always be in a well lit and busy area.

· Plan your route... try to stay on main thoroughfares and roadways and, whenever possible, let family members know your plans and expected arrival times.

· Try not to travel alone and avoid trouble spots... there's safety in numbers and some areas of town are more prone to criminal activity than others, especially late at night or during the early morning hours.

· Keep your doors locked and windows closed... good advice at home and when you are on the road.

· Do not allow yourself to be involved in Road Rage... Sadly, we live in a time when more and more people are prone to violence, often over seemingly trivial matters. If you have angered someone on the highway don't escalate the situation by "trying to prove a point." Avoid making eye contact, the use of "sign language," or any form of communication with a motorists who appears to be upset with you.

· Carry a cell phone... if you find yourself in an emergency situation you can immediately call for assistance.

· Do not drive and talk on the cell phone... they're great for in-car emergencies but chatting on them while you are driving will greatly increase your chances of becoming involved in an a highway incident or worse, an accident.

· Be careful at stoplights and on the expressway ramps... Carjackers often will stage an accident by bumping into the back of a car in order to get the driver to pull over. When the victim gets out to look for damage the carjackers will rob them or even steal their victim's car.

· If you are bumped from behind... and it seems suspicious, motion to the driver to follow you. Turn on your emergency flashers and continue at a slow but steady pace to the nearest gas station, police station or well-lit, populated area. Then immediately call the police.
