Have You Ever Thought of This

This was given to me from one of our board members, thank you Bob….

Snopes approved.
I locked my car --- as I walked away I heard my car door unlock I went back and locked my car again three times. I looked around and saw two guys sitting in a car by the fire lane next to the store. When I looked straight at them they did not unlock my car again.

How to lock your car safely

While traveling my son stopped at a roadside park He came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into his car, and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator briefcase.....you name it ... Called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into- the police told him that there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.. They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said ...to be sure to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car, that way if there is someo ne sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim it will not be you. When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting...it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain- it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be stolen, something totally new to us...and real ... Be aware of this and please pass this note on..look how many times we all lock our doors with our keys...just to be sure we remembered to lock them....and bingo someone have our code...and whate ver was in the car...can be gone.

Keep safe everyone!

THE BENT OAK GRINCH STRUCK

What a way to start out a new month, and December at that, I knew it was to good to be true. There was a house that was broken into in the 500 block of Whispering Oak on December 1, 2008. The "Grinch" came in the rear of the house between 10:30am and 3:00pm. So please be extra careful this time of year, we do not need any more of this to happen, so everybody, take a few minutes to look up and down your street to see if there is anything going on. The police were called and the sheriffs office assigned a detective to investigate...... Be Safe, please...... Dave

THE BENT OAK GRINCH

It is fast approaching, that time of the year when that nasty person, the Bent Oak Grinch comes out of where ever it hides since last year. This year lets all get together and see if we can't stop the Grinch. All that needs to be done, is, take a few minutes and look around your home area, up and down the street and see if there is something going on that should not be happening. Also if you are going away tell some of your neighbors and let them know you will be gone, and let them know if you are going to have someone doing anything at your house. Have a wonderful time this time of year, this is a fun time, so lets make sure we have a lot of it..... Dave

HERE IS AN IDEA THAT WILL HELP

I never would have thought of this:

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr.'s Office, the check out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house an d will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is tr ying to break in your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around... After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that! And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.

This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a sexual assault. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem. P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. It would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone.
What a GREAT idea.

SAFETY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Some simple holiday shopping tips from Sheriff Beary
and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Squad

1. Don't become distracted - Stay aware of your surroundings, even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things.

2. Don't carry a purse or wallet in a careless manner - If possible avoid carrying or displaying large amounts of cash.

3. Don't carry cash or valuables in usual locations - Keep cash in your front pocket with small amounts in your wallet or purse.

4. Don't overload yourself with packages - It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

5. Don't park in dark or unpopulated areas - Park in a well lit space as close to the store or building entrances as possible.

6. Don't ignore strangers as they approach you - At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. Looking people in the face and saying hello lets them know you saw them and may reduce their desire to attack you. Besides it's the nice thing to do.

7. Don't leave your car unlocked - Remember it takes only a few seconds to lock up your car and put packages into the trunk. "Lock It or Loose It"

8. Don't shop with children without having a plan - Make sure that children know where to go if they get separated and who to go to for help. The cash register clerk is usually a good person to ask for help in stores.

9. Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped or a trusted neighbor pick it up if you are leaving town - If mail piles up, it's a sure sign you're gone.

10. Don't leave your house looking vacant - Place timers on lights in various rooms and at various times to give the appearance that someone is home.

11. Don't leave your home door or garage door open or unlocked - Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. Also, it is not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others' generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there is no charity involved.

12. Last but not least, don't let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit - Make time to get together with family, friends, and neighbors. Think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and helping someone who is less fortunate or lonely.

Following these basic safety tips could prevent you or your loved ones from becoming a victim. Remember it is equally important to call and report suspicious activity or people to law enforcement as soon as possible. Doing this may prevent a crime from occurring in the first place.

We never had this when we were kids

The Internet is a powerful tool children can use to learn and connect with friends. Teaching them safe surfing practices when they are young can protect them throughout their lives.
This generation of young people will be the first raised in the Internet era. Using computers and devices that access the Internet will be something they expect rather than a new and exciting trend. As time goes on, their lives will become more and more “Web-based” through social networking, information retrieval, commerce, and connecting with family and friends.
We don’t teach children to drive by giving them the keys to the car and expecting them to be “self-taught.” Similarly, we shouldn’t let them sit down at the computer and surf away without training and supervision. At times it may seem our children know more about the Internet and technology then we do, however, that doesn’t change the responsibility parents have to teach their children to use the Internet safely.

CYBER-SECURITY TIPS

Who wants to go phishing?
Consider this: If you receive a phone call from someone and they said, “Hi, this is (insert name here). I need to log on to your computer to clean a virus; could you give me your password please?” What would you do? No, this isn’t where you blame your kids for using your computer and catching a virus. This is a hypothetical question. It’s called ‘phishing’ and it happens. Hmmmm…“phishing happens”…maybe an idea for a new t-shirt with a big yellow smiley face on it.

If you do your banking on-line you have probably received emails from your bank warning of various schemes to steal your account information. These phishing schemes sometimes arrive as an official looking email with a link to what you ‘think’ is your bank’s web page. It is very easy to duplicate a webpage, so the ‘bad guys’ just make a fake page; you proceed to login; and presto, they have your username and password. They can then logon to the ‘real’ bank’s web page and buy that Harley they’ve always wanted.....using your money.

A simplified example yes, but food for thought. Check out the link below for information about fishing....err, I mean PHISHING. J

CAR SEATS FOR YOUR CHILD

Which seat is right for your child?

4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly. Could yours be one of them?

Infants until at least 1 year old and at least 20 pounds should be in a REAR-FACING CAR SEAT.
Infants must ride in the back seat facing the rear of the vehicle. This offers the best protection for your infants neck. Recline the rear-facing seat at a 45 degree angle. If the seat doesn't want to stay angled, a firmly rolled towel under the seat may help.

Kids over 1 year old and between 20 and 40 pounds can be in a FORWARD-FACING CAR SEAT.
It is important that the seat straps be fitted properly. Route the harness straps in slots above shoulder level. The harness clip should be at armpit level. Place the seat in the upright position and keep the harness straps snug.

Kids between 40 and about 60/80 pounds (usually 4 to 8 years old) should be in BOOSTER SEATS.
A booster seat makes lap and shoulder belts fit correctly: low over hips and upper thighs and snug over the shoulders. These seats must be used with both lap and shoulder belts.

Usually kids over 80 pounds and 8 years old can fit correctly in LAP / SHOULDER BELTS.
One way to tell if your child is ready is to check to see if there knees are bent at the edge of the seat without slouching. Never put shoulder belts under kids' arms or behind their backs.

Before you hit the road take a minute to be sure your child is riding safely. Study your vehicle owner's manual and car seat instructions carefully.

Never place a rear-facing infant in the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger air bag (unless you have a manual cut-off switch and have turned it off!). The back seat is the safest place for kids of any age.
Send in the car seat registration card to be notified in case your car seat is recalled. If you have any questions call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline (888-DASH-2DOT).
Replace any car seat that has been involved in a crash.
Route the safety belt correctly through the car seat.
Correctly buckle the car seat into the vehicle.
Get a tight fit -- the seat should not move more than one inch from side to side or toward the front of the vehicle.
Check your vehicle owner's manual to see if you need a locking clip. Not all safety belts will secure your car seat without it

Safety Tips for Halloween

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR TRICK OR TREATING
Trick or Treating should be one of the great adventures of Halloween for kids! They can get dressed in scary costumes and go door to door, begging "Tricks or Treats!" from neighbors or walk around the local mall. Lots of towns have a Harvest Festival so kids can Trick-or-Treat safely. But going door to door is the stuff of childhood memories! It should be a fun time, without trouble and pain, so following some easy tips can keep your child safe every Halloween.

Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves.
Always accompany young children. Small children should never be allowed to go out alone on Halloween.
Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Stop only at familiar houses in your own neighborhood unless they are accompanied by an adult.
Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields. *** Make sure they know to stay in populated places and don't go off the *** beaten track. Stay in well lighted areas.
Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you.

General Safety Tips For EveryoneHomeowners should prepare their home for trick-or-treaters by removing obstacles from the front yard, restraining dogs and other animals, and lighting the house well
Provide treats that are individually wrapped candy or offer kids nonfood treats, such as stickers and erasers.
Artificial lights and candles are a safer alternative to real candles with a flame that can pose a fire hazard
If going to an adult Halloween party, make sure that you don't drink and drive. Use a designated driver if alcohol is being consumed.

Fog, What Do I Do

FHP: Tips for Driving in Fog
Fog is a thin layer of cloud resting on the ground. It can reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions. When conditions make fog likely, be prepared to cope at a moment's notice. It can be patchy, going from a light mist to a thick cover in an instant. If you can't postpone your trip until dense fog lifts -- usually by late morning or the afternoon -- follow these tips:

DRIVE WITH LIGHTS on low beam. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more. Your lights help other drivers see your vehicle, so be sure they all work. Keep your windshield and headlights clean, to reduce the glare and increase visibility.

SLOW DOWN - and watch your speedometer - before you enter a patch of fog. Be sure that you can stop within the distance that you can see. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding. Speed is a major factor in fog-related crashes.

WATCH OUT for slow-moving and parked vehicles. Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hear better.

REDUCE THE DISTRACTIONS in your vehicle. Turn off the radio and cell phone. Your full attention is required.

USE WIPERS AND DEFROSTERS liberally for maximum visibility. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if poor visibility is due to fog or moisture on the windshield.

USE THE RIGHT EDGE of the road or painted road markings as a guide.

BE PATIENT. Avoid passing and/or changing lanes.

SIGNAL TURNS well in advance and brake early as you approach a stop.

DO NOT STOP on a freeway or heavily traveled road. You could become the first link in a chain-reaction collision. If you must pull off the road, signal (people tend to follow tail lights when driving in fog), then carefully pull off as far as possible. After pulling off the road, turn on your hazard flashers(hazard lights should only be used when you pull over to show that you are parked on the side of the road). Move away from the vehicle.

REMAIN CALM & BE PATIENT!!

Move Over Law

If you were wondering what the Move Over Law is, and were afraid to ask, well here it is from the FHP..... Dave

Florida law enforcement officers are serious about enforcement of the Move Over Law!

On a two-lane roadway, you are required to slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.

If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, you must slow down to five miles per hour.

If you are driving on an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction, and you approach an emergency or law enforcement vehicle parked along the roadway, you must vacate the lane closest to that vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

Violating the move over law puts both yourself and a public safety professional at risk.

Violating the move over law can result in a fine and points on your license.

For more information about Florida's Move Over Law, please visit or contact www.flhsmv.gov/fhp.

TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE

Residential Burglary Prevention

It's not the "Good ole days" any more.... We must all take proactive steps to help reduce the opportunity for a criminal to enter our homes. With a few easy tips we can keep our neighborhoods and our personal homes safer.
Make sure all exterior door have sturdy, well constructed dead bolt locks
Secure sliding glass doors with pressure locks across the center, drill holes into the top track and install screws left sticking out so the door can't be lifted up off it's track. Install a pin that goes thru the door frame & fixed frame.

Lock all windows or "pin" them by drilling a hole at a 45 degree angle between the inner & outer frame and insert a nail with a head large enough to be removed by you.
Don't hide keys around your yard, give one to a trusted neighbor instead.
"Light Up" Thieves hate lights!! Install extra outside lights and use them. Motion detector lights are also recommended. Invest in automatic timers for inside and outside lights.

Crimes via Text Messaging

A woman has changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc…was stolen.

Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says "I received your text asking about our Pin number and I replied a little while ago."

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson: do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... and very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

WAY TO GO BENT OAK

All I can say is WAY TO GO BENT OAK!!!! Just in case you haven't heard, we had some excitement in Bent Oak Thursday July 24Th. I will try to make this short.

Several of our neighbors were out for a walk and saw 4 youths walking between two houses on Lost Pine, they knew that they did not belong in Bent Oak an called the non-emergency number to report it. They sent out a deputy to check it out, by that time several other neighbors also spotted them and called the non-emergency number with the information. Well they sent out more deputies and the helicopter, and caught them. Way to go Bent Oak!!

I called the non-emergency number to find out some information and the lady there thanked me for having a great Crimewatch group, and she wanted me to let everybody know that if it wasn't for us the OCSO probably would not have caught them.

Now it is going to get interesting, there are other agencies that are getting involved on this also, so this may be bigger than what we think. I will keep everybody posted if I hear anything.

I called my Boss at the Sheriffs office and she already knew about the arrest, and thanked me for our Crimewatch group. I am so proud of the people in Bent Oak for what they did, it sure made Bent Oak allot safer.... Thank you, and WAY TO GO BENT OAK!!!!!!

BENT OAK LOOK OUT (BOLO)

Hi Everybody,
I just heard on the news about a home invasion at Sweetwater Country Club Dr. that is just down the street from our entrance. Three black men busted open the front door and went in, from what the news said they probably did not know someone was home, well they tied her up and ransacked the house, the phone rang at that time and the bad guys thought it was the police and ran out the door. The cops were called, and they even sent out the blood hound, but could not find them.

So please be on the guard and BE SAFE..... Do not hesitate to call the Sheriffs office if some thing is not right, or you see some thing that needs the cops out....... Thank you, Dave

4th OF JULY

With the big fireworks day fast coming on us, I would like to remind everybody to PLEASE be careful with the fireworks. Remember it has been very dry and the potential for a fire is high. Don't forget also to pick up all of the fireworks that are littered in the streets and the different property owners, so be a good neighbor and clean up after yourself. Thank you...... Dave

Make Your Home Safe

Stop Residential Burglaries before they start
Now is the time for Prevention
Take a Proactive approach

FREE
RESIDENTIAL SECURITY SURVEYS

The Orange County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Units are now offering FREE Residential Security Surveys, free of charge, to Orange County residents.

"This program offers an analysis of home security with recommendations on how to improve your quality of life and peace of mind," said Crime Prevention Officer Deputy Nick Cominos in Sector 3 "Since each home environment is different, even if it has the same floor plan as other homes in the neighborhood, we come out to the home and make a home security assessment of the property starting at the curb and ending with the interior of the home."

The Crime Prevention unit uses national standards set by the National Center for Crime Prevention and referred to as "Crime Prevention through Environmental Design." or CPTEDP

"Prevention is the key"

We must remain alert to the fact that criminals thrive on opportunity. Our communities are still targeted by criminals who look for easy access to residential property. The harder we make it for criminals, the better chance we stand to eliminate or at least lower the incidence of property crimes.

Approximately one-third of most burglaries involve unsecured property in the home or in cars. Leaving your car, your home or your personal property unsecured can lead to stolen property, credit card fraud and identity theft. Remember that insurance companies may not reimburse you for your loss since most minor larcenies generally fall within the customary deductible.

Home Burglary Prevention
The OCSO recommends:

GOOD LOCKS
>Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors
>Re-key locks on newly purchased homes or if key is lost or stolen
>Never hide a key outside your home.
>Install locks on all windows
>Always lock doors and windows--do not provide the burglar an opportunity
>Keep garage doors closed & locked when not in use.

Good Security starts Outside your home
>Make your address visible from the street, day & night.
>Illuminate the exterior of your home to eliminate dark hiding spots. Pay special attentions to entryways.
>Keep shrubs & trees trimmed away from front doors
>Never use first or middle names on maiboxes or nameplates
>Ladders, tools bicycles lift outside your home are an invitaion to the burglar/Theif.

SLIDING GLASS DOORS: These are most often the point of home entry
Problems
>Aluminum can be peeled to gain entry.
>Window/door can be lifted out of the track.
>Window can be forced open
Solutions:
>Tighten adjustment screws to prevent lifting door out of the track.
>Charley-bar or sliding door bar may be purchased.
>Numerous locking devices are available for sliding windows & doors.
>Utilize metal, not plastic permenently mounted devices for better secuity
> Install 2 or 3 screws into the upper track, leave them 1/2 inch out so door can't be lifted off of the track.
>Pins- install into doors or windows to prevent opening, drilling & pinning at a slightly downward angle, use 5/32" hole with a 8 or 10 penny nail
> Start a Neightborhood Watch Program
> Get a Residential Security Survey done, free thru the OCSO

Be aware of "casing" used in residential burglaries

Please be advised and aware of a common method of reconnaissance, or “casing,” used by suspects in residential burglaries. Lengthy door knocking and doorbell ringing are used in an attempt to determine if anyone is home. This method has been used on several occasions in many Areas and is known to precede a burglary. When the door is answered by a resident, the suspect will claim to be lost, solicit some type of service or product, or ask for someone that does not live there. If this happens to you, call the OCSO ASAP 407-836-HELP.

If you do not want to answer the door, you can always tell the person from behind the closed door that you cannot open it right now, or make a sufficient amount of noise inside to alert the person to your presence. Should someone attempt to break into your home, call 911 immediately.

Simple Tips
Make your home look as if you are home all the time
Put lights on timers
Leave a radio on so it sounds like your there
Lock up Before you leave
If you have an alarm system USE IT!
You would be surprised how many have them then don't use them........

"Elevate your concern or suspicion, don't hesitate to call the Sheriff's Office if you see something
out of the ordinary."

You could possibly deter a burglar from breaking into a home in your neighborhood.
"Put the pressure on the crook!"
Being aware can help both you and your neighbors lessening home burglaries.
OCSO
407-836-HELP

Remember the three D’s of burglary prevention:
Deter ~ Detect ~ Delay

Deter — Sound residential security practices and good locks are a deterrent since they eliminate the opportunity for an easy burglary.

Detect — The possibility of detection is increased if you can force a burglar to work where he can be observed. A burglar also wants to avoid drawing attention to himself by making noise, such as breaking glass or smashing doors.
Alarms on doors and windows are the surest way to detect a burglar, but watchful neighbors alert to unusual activity who will notify law enforcement authorities are also an effective means of detection.

Delay — Delaying a burglar for four minutes is generally considered sufficient to prevent entry into a residential dwelling. A burglar wants to avoid being caught,
so the longer it takes to force a door or window, the greater his risk. It is nearly impossible to make a house
or apartment impregnable, but it is relatively easy and inexpensive to make forced entry difficult and to delay the burglar.

By keeping in mind the principles of deterrence, detection, and delay, you will be more likely to deny the burglar access to his target. Your Home...

You don’t have to be one of the two million residential burglary victims and neither do your neighbors.

Remember —
crime prevention begins at home.

Scam, BE AWARE

Hi,
To make a long story short, we have had some young people selling books and magazines in Bent Oak who are saying that they live in Bent Oak, and also giving fake names when questioned, so please be on the guard if they knock on your door.
This is a note that I sent out to the block captains.

Hi Everybody,
Well guess what, I just received a call from my contact at the Sheriffs office and the people that have been selling books and magazines are scammers, what ever you do do not buy anything from them!!!! From what Officer Norwood said is they are headed to the Tangerine area now, so if you know anybody in that area please put them on guard. If you come into contact with them call the Non-Emergency number and have a Deputy come out to do a F.I.R. report if the people that are selling are still in the area. Remember please be on guard on this one, it is possible that we have scared them off, only time will tell..... Thank you, Dave

Bent Oak Look Out (BOLO)

Hi Everybody,
I have had two different phone calls on this so be on the guard. There has been teen ager's knocking on doors selling books for an organization but won't say what it is, or leave any information, and they say that they live in Bent Oak. On Tues. it was a young man and when the property owner asked him his name and where he lived, he gave a name Williams and gave an address, well the address does not exist. When I received the call I went right out looking for that person and could not locate him. Today (4/25/08 Friday) I received another phone call and this time the person called the non-emergency number to make a report, I went looking for the young lady but did not see her, maybe she left. So please be on the guard on this issue, and please be safe...... Dave

Vacation Tips

With Vacation time getting closer, here is some good ideas on how to be just a little more safe, and have fun on vacation..... Dave

ON THE ROAD

While you are on your vacation, you can greatly increase our protection by taking the following safety precautions.

Carry traveler’s checks instead of large amounts of cash.

Always carry wallets, purses and bags securely. (Do not leave purses on chairs, under tables or on restroom hooks.)

Keep your cash, jewelry and valuables (such as passports, cameras and airline tickets) locked in your hotel safety deposit box or safe.

Keep track of your keys. (You may consider returning your hotel room key to the front desk while away from your room.)

Do not leave room keys laying around the swimming pool.

NEVER pick up hitchhikers.

Never leave your keys in unattended car, even while running a quick errand or filling up with gas.

While driving, travel on main roads and use maps.

Lock any packages, cameras, clothing or other valuables in the trunk when you leave your car.

At night, park your car in a well-lighted area. Remember to lock doors and roll up windows.

Be wary of solicitors.

Travel in pairs or groups if possible.

Pay attention to your surroundings. Should you see anything suspicious call 9-1-1.

ALWAYS lock your hotel room door, even if just going for ice. Intruders much prefer to walk in rather than crash in.

Internet Safety

Hi Everybody, Here is some information you might be interested in, it is concerning internet use, thank you, have a safe day..... Dave

GENERAL INFORMATION

FOLLOW THE SAME COMMON-SENSE RULES THAT YOU FOLLOW IN "REAL LIFE."

DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION TO STRANGERS. Never tell your computer passwords to anyone who asks for them in a chat room or by instant message. Think very carefully before giving out your real name, address, telephone number, work place, or any other bit of information that someone with evil thoughts could use to hurt you.

NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. If you are registering for a service that has a legitimate need for your Social Security number, provide the information through traditional mail.

KNOW WHO YOU ARE DOING BUSINESS WITH. Check out who you do business with on the internet, just as you would if you were trying to get your lawn mower repaired, looking for someone to do your taxes, etc.

BE VERY SELECTIVE WHO YOU GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER TO. Some web sites have set up systems for conducting secure credit card transactions by encrypting your information when you order merchandise. They are PROBABLY safer than sites without similar programs. Remember rule 4.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD FILE ATTACHMENTS FROM PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW. This applies both to other web sites and e-mail. Most computer viruses come in the form of executable files.

THINK BEFORE YOU POST YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS. Otherwise your computer may end up being a dumping ground for junk-mail. If you have already become an e-mail junk-mail victim, try contacting your service provider to change your e-mail name and leave no forwarding address. If this is unsuccessful, you may need to change your service provider. Then, let only those you wish to communicate with know your new internet address

60 people Needed to train FREE in advanced first aid/CPR/Emergency Response to respond in the event of a large disaster.
I just wanted to send you information that you could share with your contacts regarding a grant that we’ve received at Red Cross to train 60 people in advanced first aid/CPR/Emergency Response to respond in the event of a large disaster. This grant will allow us to offer our normally $300 emergency responder course for free to people who are willing to become Red Cross volunteers and make a commitment to respond to work in one of our shelters or other places as required should we have a major disaster. Please call me or email with any questions you might have. I’ve attached the schedule for training. Our March class has already started but there is still a class in April and another one in May. I look forward to hearing from you.

CRIMEWATCH ALERT

I recieved this from the Sheriffs dept. please be on the guard.... Thank you, Dave

Gypsy Alerts

Please be aware that we may have Gypsies in the Central Florida area. These individuals traditionally commit fraud and other crimes in our community.

Here are some common practices by these individuals:

o They contact a homeowner and tell the homeowner that they need some type of home repair (usually roof repair). The Gypsy will then collect cash to purchase the home repair supplies only to never be seen again.

o Gypsy talks their way into a person’s home, distracts the homeowner and takes valuables from inside the home.

o They pose as either utility company worker a tree trimmer, a surveyor or something similar. They lure the elderly resident out of their house. Once this occurs, another member of the crew will enter the residence and in a matter of just a few minutes, steal cash, jewelry, etc from the house.

o A common technique used by these individuals to get into your home. They will claim that a neighbor asked them to stop by your place. They will even know your neighbor’s name. Please be cautious.

Many of these individuals will have the equipment and tools to fit
the role of a repairman or contractor that they are impersonating.

“DO NOT BE FOOLED”
“STAY ALERT” “
“SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS”

ALWAYS REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING

o DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO ENTER YOUR HOME UNLESS THEY ARE FAMILY OR A TRUSTED FRIEND.
o USE CAUTION WHEN SOMEONE APPROACHES YOU. EVEN WHEN THEY SAY THAT THEY WERE REFERRED TO YOU BY YOUR NEIGHBOR.
o CONTACT YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IF YOU SUSPECT OR FEAR SOMEONE IS TRYING TO ENTER YOUR HOME

SHERIFF’S OFFICE
EMERGENCY 911
NON EMERGENCY 407-836-HELP (4357)

o WHEN SOME KNOCKS ON YOUR DOOR ALWAYS ANSWER THROUGH A CLOSED WINDOW. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY KNOW THE PERSON.

INFO ON PROPERTY CRIME PREVENTION

Hi Everybody, Here is some information that may be helpful to you. I don't know about you but, I will be glad when we are done with the cold weather. Remember be safe.... See you at the BOHA meeting...... Dave S.

Property Crime Prevention

Lock all doors and windows while home or away. Use good quality deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and easy to install auxiliary locks on windows.

Trim shrubbery below window level and clear of entrances. Do not give burglars a place to hide.

Lights at night are essential to your personal safety as well as that of your property.

Do not leave items of value in unattended vehicles. Vehicles are safest stored in a garage. If that isn't possible, park in a well-lighted area and use an alarm.

Keep fence gates closed and locked.

Record the make, model and serial number of all home electronics and appliances.

Take color photographs of jewelry, antiques and collectibles. A home video is a good record of your valuables too.

Know who is coming into your home. Control the access by persons not well known to you.

Suspicious persons or activities at your neighbors house? Report it to the OCSO non-emergency number, 407- 737- 2400, immediately. You could be witnessing a crime in progress.

While out of town, make your house look occupied. Put lights and radios on timers.

Stop mail and newspaper delivery. Have your lawn mowed. Leave a key and alarm codes with a trusted friend or neighbor who can make checks of your home.

Child Car Seats

Very Important E-Mail Scam

I just received this from the Sheriff's office, be on guard with the e-mails... Dave

Just in and out to you,
from Cpl. Bryan Tittle OCSO Crime Prevention Unit

IRS Warns Taxpayers of New E-mail Scams

Updated Jan. 14, 2008 — A new variation of the refund scheme may be directed toward organizations that distribute funds to other organizations or individuals. In an attempt to seem legitimate, the scam e-mail claims to be sent by, and contains the name and supposed signature of, the Director of the IRS Exempt Organizations area of the IRS. The e-mail asks recipients to click on a link to access a form for a tax refund. In reality, taxpayers claim their tax refunds through the filing of an annual tax return, not a separate application form.

Home Break In

I received a call from a property owner on Whispering Oak and their house was broken into and some very nice things were stolen. Their house backs up to Lk. Pleasant and who ever stole the items passed them over the fence. Entrance into the house was in the back. The police was called and a report was made.

Thank you.... Dave S.
