Tow To Go program

Just in from Sector 4 Crime Prevention Officer Bryan Tittle
Holiday Celebration Safety
Here is some great information from AAA. They are again offering the Tow to Go program, which offers intoxicated people a free tow, taking both the driver and the vehicle safely home. Anyone who needs this service can call 1-800-AAA-HELP (which is also their 24-hour emergency road service number.) The caller does not have to be AAA member and there is no charge. This service runs through and including 1/1/08.
If you ever need this on other holidays, there is a list of the ones the service covers on their website at www.aaasouth.com/acs_news/tow_to_go.asp. Those dates are for 2007; you can check back in 2008 for a revised list.
Tow To Go

2008 Holiday Schedule & Fact Sheet
A Partnership Between AAA Auto Club South & Budweiser
A program offering Members and Nonmembers, a confidential free-ride home and tow of their vehicle in order to avoid a potential drunk-driving situation.
Since its inception in 1998, "Tow to Go" has safely removed more than 7,000 potentially drunk drivers from the roads
Call 1-800-AAA-HELP -- the call will be directed to a ERS Call Center, depending on where the call originates
The AAA call taker knows to dispatch a contractor participating in the program (contractors have already agreed to be a part of the program)
The AAA contractor arrives at the vehicle and takes the vehicle and the driver safely home, free of charge to the motorist

Also please remember to use a designated driver. Even a small amount of intoxicants can cause impairment before you even realize it. Many of the local cab companies have also offered similar programs in the past. Drink responsibly and have a safe and happy holiday season!!.

HAPPY HOLIDAY'S !!!!!!

I would like to wish everybody a very happy holiday. It has been a good year for Bent Oak, with out everybody's help and time you have spent watching out for your neighbors, and have them watching out for you, we could have had more problems than what we did. With Christmas right around the corner, and then comes the New Year, so if you are going to be on the roads new years eve please drive Safe!!!! Lets have a great 2008, again thank you for a good year...... Dave Sukkert

12 DON'TS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Some simple holiday shopping tips from Sheriff Beary
and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Squad

1. Don't become distracted - Stay aware of your surroundings, even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things.

2. Don't carry a purse or wallet in a careless manner - If possible avoid carrying or displaying large amounts of cash.

3. Don't carry cash or valuables in usual locations - Keep cash in your front pocket with small amounts in your wallet or purse.

4. Don't overload yourself with packages - It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

5. Don't park in dark or unpopulated areas - Park in a well lit space as close to the store or building entrances as possible.

6. Don't ignore strangers as they approach you - At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. Looking people in the face and saying hello lets them know you saw them and may reduce their desire to attack you. Besides it's the nice thing to do.

7. Don't leave your car unlocked - Remember it takes only a few seconds to lock up your car and put packages into the trunk. "Lock It or Loose It"

8. Don't shop with children without having a plan - Make sure that children know where to go if they get separated and who to go to for help. The cash register clerk is usually a good person to ask for help in stores.

9. Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped or a trusted neighbor pick it up if you are leaving town - If mail piles up, it's a sure sign you're gone.

10. Don't leave your house looking vacant - Place timers on lights in various rooms and at various times to give the appearance that someone is home.

11. Don't leave your home door or garage door open or unlocked - Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. Also, it is not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others' generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there is no charity involved.

12. Last but not least, don't let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit - Make time to get together with family, friends, and neighbors. Think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and helping someone who is less fortunate or lonely.

Following these basic safety tips could prevent you or your loved ones from becoming a victim. Remember it is equally important to call and report suspicious activity or people to law enforcement as soon as possible. Doing this may prevent a crime from occurring in the first place.

If you see something suspicious that is not an emergency please call:

Bent Oak Look Out (BOLO)

It sure is getting near the Holidays, and the Grinch's are out in full force, all around. I have been notified by a neighbor that in several other developments, around Bent Oak, that several vehicles have been broken into. Entry has been by breaking windows, but where the problem is, there were things left out in plain sight, so it's "easy pickens". So please remove all of your valuables or put them in your trunk, make sure there is nothing that the Grinch can see.

Also the Gypsies are back, they have been spotted cruising the upscale neighborhoods. They are driving an large older blue van, saying they are selling cleaning products, so if you spot them please call the Sheriffs office and report them.

That is not all, one more, there has been auto break ins at the Sweetwater Baptist Church 12/13/07, car windows broken, there must have had something in plain sight for them to do the break ins.

So please remove all of the valuables in your vehicle, and make sure they are locked. With everybody keeping an eye out maybe the grinch will skip Bent Oak.

Yall be safe and have a wonderful holiday!!!!!!! Dave

I.C.E.

Hi Everybody,
I have something that is very important to discuss with everybody, it is called I.C.E. That is short for "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY". Here is how it works. The emergency and police have been advised to look for that on your cell phones when ever they arrive at a scene where the person is not able to communicate. They look for a cell phone and then see if there is a listing for I.C.E. So please add to your phone book in your cell phone I.C.E. and place one or two phone numbers that they would be able to call "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY".

Also would all of the block captains please e-mail me and give me your correct e-mail addresses, I have noticed that there has been quite a few changes and if I am not notified, then I don't have the correct e-mail address. Thank you....

Everybody please be safe this Holiday season, and lets keep an eye out for
BENT OAK........Dave Sukkert

Main Entrance Gardens

Well the Grinch has struck Bent Oak again! As some of you noticed Bob has planted some pretty Poinsettias at the main entrance, well it only took one day and someone has stole about 20 or 25 of them right out of the garden, can you believe it. That is very sad, Bob is doing a wonderful job in the plantings at the entrance ways and someone just has to mess things up for Bent Oak, well I hope when they plant them where ever they took them too that they stub their toe. If anybody hears or knows who did this please leave a note here and we will follow up on it.... Thank you. Dave

Have you ever wondered?

Have you ever wondered about how 9-1-1- works? Here is some information that will help you. Ya'll be safe.... Dave
How 9-1-1 Works

Be prepared to give the 9-1-1 operator the following information:

1. Identify yourself, your location, and phone number from
which you are calling. If you are injured or unable to speak into
the phone, the 9-1-1 system automatically displays the phone number
and address of the calling location, but the operator will need you to
verify this information if you are physically able.
2. Type of crime. Was it a burglary, robbery, assault, or
shooting? If you are not sure of the type of crime or if there are
multiple incidents, explain in detail to the 9-1-1 operator exactly what
happened.
3. When and where did the crime occur? Is the crime in
progress? How long ago did it occur? Give the exact location of
where the incident occurred. Then, where you want to meet the deputy
if it is different from where you are calling.
4. Suspect information. Give the operator as much information about
the suspect and vehicle as you can. Clothing, physical characteristics,
license number, vehicle color, and direction of travel are very important.
5. WEAPONS INVOLVED. Were WEAPONS used in the crime? Who
had the weapons, how many and what kind of weapons, and where are
the weapons now? Were suspects or victims injured?

Carjack Trick
Investigators say the public should be on the lookout for carjackers who have a trick to fool their potential victims.

The carjackers use jumper cables hooked up to their battery to look like they are in trouble and then pull a gun when someone stops to help.

That is what happened to at least one good Samaritan near the University of Central Florida overnight.

Dennis Tran stopped to help three men who looked like their van was broken down, but he got suspicious and got away quickly.

"It was kind of scary. At the same time, I was like, if they are going to do anything like shoot me, they would have shot me through the car," Tran said.

Orange County deputies said Tran's experience was the second attempted carjacking Tuesday night. They also said the would-be carjackers used a van they took in the Pine Hills area Tuesday.

Halloween pointers from OCSO

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR TRICK OR TREATING

Trick or Treating should be one of the great adventures of Halloween for kids! They can get dressed in scary costumes and go door to door, begging "Tricks or Treats!" from neighbors or walk around the local mall. Lots of towns have a Harvest Festival so kids can Trick-or-Treat safely. But going door to door is the stuff of childhood memories! It should be a fun time, without trouble and pain, so following some easy tips can keep your child safe every Halloween.

Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves.
Always accompany young children. Small children should never be allowed to go out alone on Halloween.
Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Stop only at familiar houses in your own neighborhood unless they are accompanied by an adult.
Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields. *** Make sure they know to stay in populated places and don't go off the *** beaten track. Stay in well lighted areas.
Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you.

General Safety Tips For Everyone
*Homeowners should prepare their home for trick-or-treaters by removing obstacles from the front yard, restraining dogs and other animals, and lighting the house well
*Provide treats that are individually wrapped candy or offer kids nonfood treats, such as stickers and erasers.
*Artificial lights and candles are a safer alternative to real candles with a flame that can pose a fire hazard
*If going to an adult Halloween party, make sure that you don't drink and drive. Use a designated driver if alcohol is being consumed.

Bent Oak Crimewatch info

Hi Everybody,
I knew it was too good to last, Bent Oak had some problems the last few days. On 10/1/07 at approximately 7:30pm on Bent Oak Dr. a Black man dressed in somewhat dirty cloths with a shirt that said "Cable" on the back, knocked on a door and said that he was there to cut off the power and needed to get inside the house. He asked if your father was home and the quick acting boy said that he was home but was in the shower. The man was persistent on getting inside the house to cut the power off. The boy said he was not going to let him in, and then the man left. The police were called and they made a couple trips around Bent Oak but could not find anything. That was a quick acting boy that said what he did say, good for him!!!!!

A car was ransacked and a few Cd's were taken, the car was not locked up, the police were called on that one too.

We are getting to that time of the year when we have to be special careful on what we do, so be on the look out for anything that does not look just right, and don't be afraid to watch out for your neighbors, because I hope they will be looking out for your homes too. Lets all get together and be safe...... Dave S.

I recieved this from OCSO, (Information)

SRO = School Resource Officer

Subject: RE: Florida Youth Challenge Academy

The Florida National Guard operates a program for at risk juveniles ages 16-18 at Camp Blanding (near Jacksonville). It is a voluntary residential program that lasts about 6 weeks. No Felony convections or adjudications.

Mr. Hawthorne Herbert is the admissions coordinator and volunteered to give your SROs a presentation about the program. His office number is (904)682-4032. This program has been extremely successful and is accredited by the school board in Clay County. I believe this would be a great resource for the SROs if they are not already aware of the program.

They can also visit our website at www.ngycp.org/state/fl for more information about the academy.

The Florida Youth Challenge Academy is a State Certified High School. Applicants can earn a standard high school diploma by passing the GED and FCAT. Classes starts in January and July each year. They are now accepting application for the January session.

What did that person look like?

HOW TO DESCRIBE A SUSPECT
An accurate description of the suspect and vehicle involved in any crime is
important in the apprehension of the criminal. Try to notice and remember the
following characteristics of a suspect, write them down if possible, and give this
information to the 9-1-1 operator when calling law enforcement to report the
crime:
Suspect
.. Sex
.. Race
.. Age
.. Height (Estimate in 2 inch blocks. Example: About
5’8” and use your own height or surroundings on
which to base your estimate.)
.. Weight (Estimate in blocks of ten pounds. Example:
130 to 140 pounds)
.. Build (Describe the frame and body type. Example:
large, medium, or small frame, heavy, slim, stocky,
obese, frail.)
.. Hair (color; texture – thick, thin, balding, fine, course;
style – straight, wavy, curly, frizzy); style it is worn, length. Do not
forget facial hair (mustache, beard, sideburns)
.. Clothing (Start at the top and work down – hat to shoes, noting the
color, types, brands, prints and logos.)
.. Characteristics (These include any and all distinguishing marks, scars,
tattoos, speech patterns, jewelry, eyeglasses, etc.)
.. Direction and mode of travel (In what direction, or towards what area
and, if on foot, bicycle, car, etc.)

School Begins

Can you believe it, school starts already. As most of you have noticed the No Parking signs at the main entrance of Bent Oak. We have a problem with that corner and we contacted the county about putting up the signs there, we feel they are in the wrong place and have recontacted them on getting them moved. Where the problem comes is when people drop off their children at Clay Springs and park at that corner, it causes quite a problem, especially for the safety of the children, not counting all of the cars that go in and out that entrance.
Speed is another concern here in Bent Oak, so please keep your speed down, and lets keep Bent Oak a safe place to live...... Dave

Vacation hints

Summer vacation time is fast approaching, and who out there don’t think that you could use a good vacation?
Here is a few pointers that can be done to make your home just a little safer, so when you return it is in the same condition as when you left.
Have your paper stopped, or have a neighbor pick it up as early as possible, just to make sure several papers do not end up in your driveway. This sends a “Red Flag” up saying “no one home”.
Mail is another important “Red Flag”. You can have the mail stopped and started very easy. Or you can have one of your neighbors pick up your mail, after all you could return the favor, and do the same for them.
Pick up a timer for a lamp, or even two of them, that will go on and off at different times in different parts of your home. Put them where they will do the most good.
Give your neighbor some phone numbers where you can be reached, and some phone numbers locally, if possible, just incase your neighbor needs to reach someone in a hurry.
Please tell your neighbor if you will be having anybody come to your home to do anything, and what kind of vehicle they will be driving.
Speaking of vehicles, don’t forget to remove any valuables and LOCK them up. Most of the items that were removed came from an unlocked vehicle.
Now all of this has been done, go on that needed vacation and have a wonderful time, take plenty of pictures. Dave Sukkert Crime watch coordinator
