Tow To Go program

Just in from Sector 4 Crime Prevention Officer Bryan Tittle
Holiday Celebration Safety
Here is some great information from AAA. They are again offering the Tow to Go program, which offers intoxicated people a free tow, taking both the driver and the vehicle safely home. Anyone who needs this service can call 1-800-AAA-HELP (which is also their 24-hour emergency road service number.) The caller does not have to be AAA member and there is no charge. This service runs through and including 1/1/08.
If you ever need this on other holidays, there is a list of the ones the service covers on their website at www.aaasouth.com/acs_news/tow_to_go.asp. Those dates are for 2007; you can check back in 2008 for a revised list.
Tow To Go

2008 Holiday Schedule & Fact Sheet
A Partnership Between AAA Auto Club South & Budweiser
A program offering Members and Nonmembers, a confidential free-ride home and tow of their vehicle in order to avoid a potential drunk-driving situation.
Since its inception in 1998, "Tow to Go" has safely removed more than 7,000 potentially drunk drivers from the roads
Call 1-800-AAA-HELP -- the call will be directed to a ERS Call Center, depending on where the call originates
The AAA call taker knows to dispatch a contractor participating in the program (contractors have already agreed to be a part of the program)
The AAA contractor arrives at the vehicle and takes the vehicle and the driver safely home, free of charge to the motorist

Also please remember to use a designated driver. Even a small amount of intoxicants can cause impairment before you even realize it. Many of the local cab companies have also offered similar programs in the past. Drink responsibly and have a safe and happy holiday season!!.

It has been a good year for Bent Oak, with out everybody's help and time you have spent watching out for your neighbors, and have them watching out for you, we could have had more problems than what we did. With Christmas right around the corner, and then comes the New Year, so if you are going to be on the roads new years eve please drive Safe!!!! Lets have a great 2008, again thank you for a good year...... Dave Sukkert

12 DON'TS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Some simple holiday shopping tips from Sheriff Beary
and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Squad

1. Don't become distracted - Stay aware of your surroundings, even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things.

2. Don't carry a purse or wallet in a careless manner - If possible avoid carrying or displaying large amounts of cash.

3. Don't carry cash or valuables in usual locations - Keep cash in your front pocket with small amounts in your wallet or purse.

4. Don't overload yourself with packages - It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

5. Don't park in dark or unpopulated areas - Park in a well lit space as close to the store or building entrances as possible.

6. Don't ignore strangers as they approach you - At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. Looking people in the face and saying hello lets them know you saw them and may reduce their desire to attack you. Besides it's the nice thing to do.

7. Don't leave your car unlocked - Remember it takes only a few seconds to lock up your car and put packages into the trunk. "Lock It or Loose It"

8. Don't shop with children without having a plan - Make sure that children know where to go if they get separated and who to go to for help. The cash register clerk is usually a good person to ask for help in stores.

9. Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped or a trusted neighbor pick it up if you are leaving town - If mail piles up, it's a sure sign you're gone.

10. Don't leave your house looking vacant - Place timers on lights in various rooms and at various times to give the appearance that someone is home.

11. Don't leave your home door or garage door open or unlocked - Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. Also, it is not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others' generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there is no charity involved.

12. Last but not least, don't let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit - Make time to get together with family, friends, and neighbors. Think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and helping someone who is less fortunate or lonely.

Following these basic safety tips could prevent you or your loved ones from becoming a victim. Remember it is equally important to call and report suspicious activity or people to law enforcement as soon as possible. Doing this may prevent a crime from occurring in the first place.

Bent Oak Look Out (BOLO)

It sure is getting near the Holidays, and the Grinch's are out in full force, all around. I have been notified by a neighbor that in several other developments, around Bent Oak, that several vehicles have been broken into. Entry has been by breaking windows, but where the problem is, there were things left out in plain sight, so it's "easy pickens". So please remove all of your valuables or put them in your trunk, make sure there is nothing that the Grinch can see.

Also the Gypsies are back, they have been spotted cruising the upscale neighborhoods. They are driving an large older blue van, saying they are selling cleaning products, so if you spot them please call the Sheriffs office and report them.

That is not all, one more, there has been auto break ins at the Sweetwater Baptist Church 12/13/07, car windows broken, there must have had something in plain sight for them to do the break ins.

So please remove all of the valuables in your vehicle, and make sure they are locked. With everybody keeping an eye out maybe the grinch will skip Bent Oak.

Yall be safe and have a wonderful holiday!!!!!!! Dave

I.C.E.

Hi Everybody,
I have something that is very important to discuss with everybody, it is called I.C.E. That is short for "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY". Here is how it works. The emergency and police have been advised to look for that on your cell phones when ever they arrive at a scene where the person is not able to communicate. They look for a cell phone and then see if there is a listing for I.C.E. So please add to your phone book in your cell phone I.C.E. and place one or two phone numbers that they would be able to call "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY".

Also would all of the block captains please e-mail me and give me your correct e-mail addresses, I have noticed that there has been quite a few changes and if I am not notified, then I don't have the correct e-mail address. Thank you....

Everybody please be safe this Holiday season, and lets keep an eye out for
BENT OAK........Dave Sukkert
