Another Scam

Here is another scam, be careful..... Dave

The Better Business Bureau is warning you about a new phishing scam that could catch you off guard.

The consumer agency says crooks are sending e-mails to people, which claim to be some kind of notice or complaint from the BBB itself.

You're supposed to click a link to learn more about the complaint.

But when you do, the BBB says it downloads malware onto your computer, which gives those crooks access to your passwords and bank account information.

The Better Business Bureau says you should watch out for any e-mails claiming to be from the consumer agency -- because they're likely fake and dangerous.

Another Scam

Here is another scam to add to the list,Dave.......... Utility Scam Spreads Nationwide Thousands of Americans have fallen victim to a scam that claims to be a program to help people pay for utility bills. The new scam programs come at a time when air conditioning units are on full blast in many places around the country. The scheme is a nationwide occurrence, hitting customers from the Midwest to the Mid- Atlantic. One of the main reasons the scam has spread so fast is because customers have posted about the “program” on line and passed the information on to friends who have then sought the aid. Most people do not realize that they have been scammed until it is too late. Contents. The scam involves customers being contacted either by automated phone call, mail, email or in a few rare occasions in person. Customers are asked to give social security numbers, credit card and checking account numbers in exchange for a new banking number when paying their utility companies. Victims essentially stop paying their utility companies and begin depositing money into a new account under the guise that they are paying less for utilities. The accounts receive the money and are then shut down or rejected, by that time it is often too late and most customers have lost their money. The Better Business Bureau is very concerned with the scam because it has spread across the nation and seems to be gaining in popularity with scam artists and cyber criminals. SOURCE Analyst Note: The major problem with a scam like this one is that when customers provide their personal information to cyber criminals, that information can be leaked across the internet to other hackers and scammers and can lead to identity theft. This type of scam is also particularly concerning because legitimate government programs do exist to help citizens in need. Private citizens need to be aware of who they are giving their personal information to. People should know who they are talking to on the phone and should never give out personal information over the phone or by email. Unsolicited calls and requests for information should be reported to police and utility companies.

I C E

Hi Everybody, I have something that is very important to discuss with everybody, it is called I.C.E. That is short for "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY". Here is how it works. The emergency and police have been advised to look for that on your cell phones when ever they arrive at a scene where the person is not able to communicate. They look for a cell phone and then see if there is a listing for I.C.E. So please add to your phone book in your cell phone I.C.E. and place one or two phone numbers that they would be able to call "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY". Everybody please be safe, and lets keep an eye out for BENT OAK........Dave Sukkert

Here is some information that may be interesting.Dave........ by Ed Gallagher - IMS Security Administrator ■ 04.15.10 - Beware of unsolicited emails from Citi Bank advising that "Your international bill pay service has been activated" and requests that you click a link to adminster it. This is a phising attempt that will send your personal information to a computer in China that will attempt to collect your login credentials. If you receive a message such as this or something similar it is best to simply delete it. Fire Works Information

What kinds of fireworks can I use legally? The short answer: not many. Fireworks generally approved for use by consumers include sparklers; small fireworks that emit colored smoke only; and "glow worms," which burn in bright colors without exploding. The state fire marshal has a full list, including brand names, at myfloridacfo.com/sfm/sparklerindex.htm. "These are the only items consumers without a permit can legally use," said Nina Ashley, a fire marshal's spokeswoman. Other, more high-powered fireworks are permitted only for industrial use or by professionals in public displays. So everything else is off limits? If it explodes, flies or lifts off, the law prohibits you from lighting it. That includes the popular Roman candles."There is no approved list of 'whiz, boom, bang or stuff that leaves the ground' for the retail public," said Bart Wright, the Maitland Fire Department's assistant chief of administration. "Florida Statute 791 is explicit about that. Consumer purchase and use of such material is unsafe, a threat and, most importantly, illegal in this state."

Information from OCSO

I got this from the OCSO, hope it helps..... Dave

Some recommended best practices and preventive measures are:
If you agree to participate, never allow a stranger into your home without verification of credentials and verification from the organization.
If you agree to participate, the preferred method would be a public place such as a restaurant or a library.
Always have another adult present with you the entire time. Never do an interview alone.
Always have a charged phone readily available.
Always verify by calling the organization by calling the number for that organization and not an individual cell phone.
Always check the credentials and if possible make a photo copy. If no photo copier is available, then a camera or camera phone may be used.
Be aware of credentials that appear to be home made.
Terminate any further action if the surveyor has no identification or refuses to provide it.
Inspect and carefully read any documents that you are requested to sign. The decision to sign or agree to anything is yours and your only.
If at anytime you decide the survey or product presentation is not professional or what was initially advertised, terminate it immediately.
Always keep valuables out of plain view, and keep all room doors closed. Do not allow anyone to wander your home alone.
Never consume alcohol with a stranger in your home, and never leave any drinks or open food unattended or near a stranger in your home.
Always write down the vehicle description including tag down.
Request the researcher not bring any bags, brief cases or computer bags in. Request they only bring in documents needed and if a computer is needed, the case be left outside.
Report suspicious activity immediately to your local law enforcement agency, and remember; The decision to participate or continue an interview is yours and yours only.

BOLO, Bent Oak Look Out

Here is two alerts for our area..... Be Safe... Dave

NW ALERT #1
This ALERT was sent by the Orange County deputy in charge of the Sweetwater HOA's security detail. After receiving it, I called the OCSO Sector One Crime Prevention Officer, Deputy Alberta Gibson, who told me to forward it to my Neighborhood Watch list:

There are 4 black males traveling throughout Sweetwater and surrounding communities creating havoc. Their method of operation is to knock on a front door and if no one answers, they go around to the rear of the residence and commit a burglary. They are quick and hitting numerous houses in the area. The vehicle changes, because they steal various cars from another area and then commence to committing the burglaries. Please be vigilant until we catch them. The times of occurrence typically begin around 10:00 a.m. weekdays.

NW ALERT #2
This Alert comes from the OCSO Sector One Crime Prevention, Deputy Alberta Gibson:

The following three mini-vans are currently being stolen by people using them to commit crimes: Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Caravan, and Plymouth Voyager. If you see such a vehicle backed into your neighbor's yard or driveway and the vehicle is unknown to you, take a close look (from inside your house!) to determine whether there is a burglary in progress. If that appears to be the case, dial 911 and report the incident. If you are the owner of such a vehicle, keep it in the garage, or if that's not possibe, keep it locked.

Fog - What Do I Do

FHP: Tips for Driving in Fog Fog is a thin layer of cloud resting on the ground. It can reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions. When conditions make fog likely, be prepared to cope at a moment's notice. It can be patchy, going from a light mist to a thick cover in an instant. If you can't postpone your trip until dense fog lifts -- usually by late morning or the afternoon -- follow these tips:

DRIVE WITH LIGHTS on low beam. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more. Your lights help other drivers see your vehicle, so be sure they all work. Keep your windshield and headlights clean, to reduce the glare and increase visibility.

SLOW DOWN - and watch your speedometer - before you enter a patch of fog. Be sure that you can stop within the distance that you can see. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding. Speed is a major factor in fog-related crashes.

WATCH OUT for slow-moving and parked vehicles. Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hear better.

REDUCE THE DISTRACTIONS in your vehicle. Turn off the radio and cell phone. Your full attention is required.

USE WIPERS AND DEFROSTERS liberally for maximum visibility. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if poor visibility is due to fog or moisture on the windshield.

USE THE RIGHT EDGE of the road or painted road markings as a guide.

BE PATIENT. Avoid passing and/or changing lanes.

SIGNAL TURNS well in advance and brake early as you approach a stop.

DO NOT STOP on a freeway or heavily traveled road. You could become the first link in a chain-reaction collision. If you must pull off the road, signal (people tend to follow tail lights when driving in fog), then carefully pull off as far as possible. After pulling off the road, turn on your hazard flashers(hazard lights should only be used when you pull over to show that you are parked on the side of the road). Move away from the vehicle.

REMAIN CALM & BE PATIENT!!
